Superman
Well I saw "Superman Returns" yesterday. There are a lot of things that I was wondering about in relation to Superman's powers. Here is my list of the "inconsistencies" in the movie. Please realize that you might can offer an explanation of some of these things, but please don't correct me. I'm only trying to ask a few rhetorical questions and have a little fun:
1) Superman can fly right over the kryptonite ocean (Luthor took a crystal, put it in kryptonite, and slung it into the ocean and created all this volcanic upheaval) and up to the kryptonite crusted island and not have any problem, but then he touches it and he's weak. ??
2) Superman, affected by kryptonite and stabbed by a kryptonite sliver, is thrown hundreds of feet into the ocean below and doesn't die. Then he is under water for a number of minutes and doesn't die. Huh? When does he lose his inability to die powers, if ever? He's human enough to be hurt, but he doesn't die with a big fall?
3) If Superman has a kid and there is discussion about who's it might be, was he showing "Super" moral restraint? Lois, um, what's with the pretense? Do you really not know?
4) Superman lifts up this piece of rock and takes it into space, from which effort (since it is kryptonite-laced) he falls to earth and nearly dies . . . but wasn't there like a whole continent of that kind of rock? How did that have any effect?
5) Superman falls from space (!) to earth, goes through the firy reentry (what is that called?) unharmed (?), creates a crater in the earth and then almost dies. Same question as number #2? When he seems to be human, why is he still impervious to destruction? What about that incident causes the critical injury? The kryptonite? Or the big fall?
6) What was Lex planning to do with the volcanic real estate??
As far as other comments, I thought they got the Clark Kent / Superman appearance thing right. Christopher Reeve always looked exactly like Superman, but they did a good job of making the Brandon Routh character look a little different with the curl in his hair and the short-of sheen like apperance of his face. The joke between Lois and her boyfriend / husband sells it a little more, as they compare Superman's known measurements to Clark's estimated ones. They can sort of dismiss it based on his clearly-non-heroic personality.
The heroic aspect of the film is always charming. Whenever Superman gets to show off his powers, every guy in the room is going, "Wow."
The theme song is, as always, so beautiful.
So that's it. I have to laugh at some of the plot inconsistencies or non-resolutions and wonder about Superman's powers, but overall an alright summer movie experience.
