The Week So Far

A horse walks up to a bar, and the bartender says, "Why the long face?"

Sunday
My week started with a very excellent YAMs Christmas party down at the New City Cafe. For those unfamiliar with the New City Cafe, it is a happening little alcove in the Old City. Through our connections with the cafe, we were able to rent out the space for the evening. So at 5:30, we journeyed with dish or dessert in hand to the cafe for a night of eating, eating, eating, talent show performances, songs, and laughter. I had the privilege of carrying in the most interesting and tallest of the desserts, a dirt cake prepared by Deanna Long, placed into a bona fide flower pot with two Christmas flowers sticking out the top through the foil.

Imagine a 3.5 hour dinner with your closest friends and everybody you like spending time with. 50 dinner and dessert items to choose from, good camaraderie and fellowship, singing, performances, old friends. It was quite a good time.

Monday
At work, celebrated the birthday of a co-worker in the department with a good time of lunch conversation with our department of 3 at the Downtown Grill & Brewery. There picked up the immortal quote alluded to yesterday: "He wants to read about adventures. He just doesn't want to go live them." At work, goal is trying to clear off what we call "exceptions", which in some cases is work that has to be done which no one cares about being done. Have also been training a young Jedi in the ways of the force, that is teaching how to do credit analyses. Fun stuff and always a learning experience. There's not a loan out there that doesn't have some unique story or point of interest. Another memorable quote from a co-worker that helps me explain what I do: "I write term papers all day."

Interest in the Return of the King extended edition growing . .

Tuesday
Had a cool breakfast with fellow small group member Jeremy Todd, where we talked about the joy of friends in the Lord. Jeremy spoke eloquently and poignantly about how much blessing there is in that fellowship.

Ran in the evening for the second straight night. Have been fighting back to good endurance since a bout of bronchitis and another cold last month. Watched a clip on the Edoras location of The Two Towers extended edition to serve as a sampler for next week's ROTK.

Learned about the value of the star in the wise men's Christmas story. Learned that the Greek is magi, always wondered where that came from, still wondering what it really means. They talked about the star rising up. That imagery really spoke to me, of the thought of the bright, brilliant light of Jesus coming into the world as expressed in the star (of wonder) rising majestically into the sky into a prominent position - and their joy-filled, enthusiastic response to come find Him. Also how Mary's husband Joseph's father was Jacob, a neat little throwback to the Jacob-Joseph father-son men in Genesis. Also that Jesus' line included some pretty terrible kings like Manasseh. Somehow God straightened some things back out before Joseph, who was a pretty impressive guy.

Today
Went to a Men's Ministry morning meeting. Good time of prayer and sharing. The level at which we are becoming willing to share honestly in our little cell group is growing. At work, getting the time to actually think about what needs to be done versus what has to be done. Aka a breather.

"In a survey, people said that the thing they were most afraid of was public speaking. Death was number #2. Death was number #2. That means if you are at a funeral, you are better off being in the casket than the one giving the eulogy." Jerry Seinfeld
